Sonic Boom at 577 Yonge St. acts as a secondary location to Toronto's famous Sonic Boom Records and celebrates one of the best experiences associated with vinyl shopping; Discovery. Inspired by album art, and the street poles outside of venues covered in staples and posters, this retail location encourages users to adorn the space with their own posters and graffiti, in the spirit of being discovered at Sonic Boom.
The highlight of this location sits at the rear of the store where a performance space sits, allowing for listening parties and small shows for emerging artists to breakthrough and share their sound.
The organization of the space is inspired by the shape of the sonic boom, with the primary shopping experience radiating out from the key spaces of the performance area and the customer service desk. Outside of the key spaces sit listening booths, allowing for a more intimate discovery, providing customers with a "try before you buy" experience, via a digitized collection of the store's new record stock.
In the spirit of discovery and interaction, customers are encouraged to make the space their own and cover the space in their own graffiti and promotions. Materiality is of an imperfect nature to encourage customers and potential performers to make the most of the space and promote themselves as they please.
The walls are covered in a plaster finish to aid in sound proofing, and act as a blank canvas to decorate with posters and graffiti, and to be painted over if needed. Columns are faced in marine plywood to make it easy to staple posters up and mimic the wood poles outside of iconic venues.
The ceiling features acoustic panels that fan out in a radiating pattern to reflect the parti of the space. Acoustic panels are selected in a vibrant blue colour as a nod to the original Sonic Boom brand.
