This intervention project at 1655 Dupont brings new life to a historic building. Once a rubber factory, this site becomes the new home of a multi-use arts and community hub, paying closer attention to user accessibility for an otherwise overlooked demographic, i.e., seniors.Â
Particular attention is paid to assisting varying degrees of cognitive abilities, promoting key factors for improvement including stimulation, familiarity, and socialization.
Primary programming includes painting studios, an activity that has been scientifically proven to improve cognitive ability in seniors. The overall design for the space is inspired the Synthetic Cubism movement, exploring how its composition and materiality can translate into inspiring spatial qualities.
Materiality continues to be inspired by the Synthetic Cubism movement. Colour palettes from this movement were generally neutral with a pop of colour and often utilized materials such as paper, cloth, newsprint, sand, dirt, and rope. The materiality of the space pays homage to the the colour palette and a number of materials to the movement, while keeping the senior demographic in mind.
The colour palette is kept neutral so as to not make the space overstimulating for those with reduced cognitive abilities, while also letting the artwork produced in the space stand out against the neutral plaster walls. All upholstery in the space is the same calming blue, the contrast against the neutral colour palette standing out for easy identification for those who may be visually impaired.
